The Story Behind this Postcard
Suffering the highest mortality rate in North America for nearly two centuries it is no surprise that death was ever present here in New Orleans. Pomp and ceremony and elaborate mourning rites were part of everyone’s repertoire! Budget may not have allowed as fancy of a funeral car as this for all, but everyone created mourning customs, processions and rites for their loved ones in one form or another. Celebration with Death with horse drawn horses such as this paraded through New Orleans town and beyond. The dedication of the Odd Fellows Rest on Feb 29,1849 hired this funeral car with her l 6 fine grays to carry the sarcophagus with remains of 16 brethren to the cemetery. The ceremony finalized in a picnic on the grounds of The Rest. Many other funerals also found this fine car for hire and similar ones are still in use to this day.
